How to Grow Spathiphyllum (Peace Lily) at Home and How to Care for It

Spathiphyllum, also known as the Peace Lily, is one of the most beautiful houseplants. It has long, shiny green leaves and elegant white flowers (spathes). It is also famous for its ability to purify the air. With a few simple tricks, you can keep it healthy and make it bloom abundantly for many months.

Main Characteristics

  • Origin: Central and South America (Araceae family)
  • Very popular as an indoor plant
  • Beautiful white “flowers” (actually spathes) that appear from spring to autumn
  • Excellent air purifier

Where to Place It in the House

  • Choose a bright room but without direct sunlight (direct sun can burn the leaves).
  • Ideal: semi-shaded spots or near a window with filtered light.
  • Keep it away from drafts (air currents from open windows or air conditioning).

How to Make It Bloom

  • The flowers last for several months (spring to autumn).
  • It does not tolerate cold: if temperatures drop below 15°C, bring it indoors.
  • Proper temperature and good care = abundant and long-lasting flowering.

Fertilizer

Use a fertilizer rich in potassium (marked with the letter K on the package) that also contains microelements such as iron, manganese, copper, zinc, boron, and molybdenum.

Watering

  • Water only when the top layer of soil is dry.
  • Test: insert a finger about 2 cm into the soil — if it’s dry, water it.
  • In summer: water more frequently.
  • In winter: water less, allowing the soil to dry out more to avoid waterlogging (which causes the plant to droop).
  • Avoid stagnant water.

Pruning and Maintenance

  • Remove dry or brown leaf tips with sterilized scissors, cutting diagonally.
  • When flowering is over, cut the flower stems at the base to encourage new blooms.
  • If leaves turn brown or black, it may be due to overwatering, underwatering, low humidity, too much light, or excess fertilizer.

Spathiphyllum is a hardy, elegant, and very grateful plant. With these simple cares, it will stay beautiful for a long time and purify the air in your home.
