To help them thrive, eggshells can be a very useful resource.

Eggshells to Heal Orchids

The term “orchid” covers many beautiful varieties. One particularly worth mentioning is Paphiopedilum. This variety is known for its magnificent leaves and usually produces one or two large, long-lasting flowers in various colors. The lifespan of a flower can be extended or shortened depending on how you care for it. Under favorable conditions, they can bloom for up to two months.

Proper watering is essential. While these plants don’t need excessive light, consistent watering is important. In winter, reduce care, but in summer with higher temperatures, maintain a higher level of care.

Eggshells can be a game-changer for orchid lovers. Orchids tend to be picky about acidic substrates, and this is where eggshells help. Don’t throw away used eggshells — they are an excellent source of calcium and can help neutralize acidity.

Simply crush the eggshells into a fine powder and add 7 grams to each liter of substrate for optimal orchid growth.

How to Make Fertilizer for Your Orchid

One method is to recycle eggshells as a natural fertilizer by crushing them and sprinkling them under the plants. As they dissolve, the soil will be enriched with calcium, which is beneficial for plant growth.

To repel slugs (which can be a nuisance), sprinkle crushed eggshells around the base of the orchid.

Another option is to air-dry the eggshells and then grind them into a fine powder. This eggshell fertilizer can be sprinkled directly around the orchids or added to the soil when repotting. It is especially effective for potted plants.

You can also make a liquid fertilizer by pouring boiling water over the eggshells and letting the mixture sit (stirring occasionally) for about an hour. Once the shells have dissolved, the liquid fertilizer is ready to use.

Before applying, shake the solution well. For best results, apply the eggshell fertilizer directly to the soil around the plant or spray the mixture on the orchids.
